INFANT (6 Weeks – 16 Months)

It has been said that a child’s mind is a blank slate on which adults “write down” the content of a good education through lecture and instruction. A similar comparison that is used often is that of an empty bowl or cup, patiently waiting to be filled by the parent’s instruction and the child’s teacher. Back in the early 1800’s, Maria Montessori established that both metaphors are greatly incorrect. Instead, it was discovered that the young child’s mind is much more similar to an observer or even a scientist in that they are eager to learn, explore, try new things, and master new skills. Perhaps even more importantly, she observed that with proper stimulation, the child’s ability to concentrate, absorb, and master new ideas and skills escalates, and that the earlier we begin a program of intellectual, physical, sensory, and creative education, the more intense the result. Infancy is a time of great sensitivity to language, spatial relationships, music, art, social graces, and much much more.

During this critical period, if the mind is stimulated by the child’s introduction to an opulent environment, the brain will actually develop a longer lasting and much stronger ability to learn and accomplish new skills and developmental milestones. It is unfortunate that our culture perceives preschool teachers as the least significant educators our children will encounter, when in reality the impact that they offer is of the utmost importance in a young child’s education. For those of us who teach infants and toddlers, this is especially true.

Younger Toddlers (16months- 27months) and Older Toddlers (27th months-42 months)

Between the age of 15 and 18 months, toddlers begin to develop a new awareness of themselves as separate, unique beings. This is a wondrous, but often frustrating time of life because they have an understanding of their actions and words, but are not yet able to just do whatever they would like. Aggression, such as pushing, hitting, and biting is somewhat common but it is typically outgrown as the toddler matures and gains speech as well as other techniques for conflict resolution and coping. In the toddler program we use words that acknowledge this frustration rather than judge the child or the behavior. Because they do not yet have the self-control to “obey” and do whatever is expected of them at all times, the adults, instead of disciplining, supervise and offer constructive, alternative, activities that allow for the child to express himself in a more productive manner.

 Preschool (3.5 - 6 years old)

Dr. Maria Montessori characterized the 3 to 6 year-old child as possessing an extraordinary ability to absorb information from his or her surroundings. She named this quality "the absorbent mind." Preschoolers use all of their senses when they explore their environment, readily picking up language and culture. Dr. Montessori had a motto for this age group: "help me to do it myself." Development during this period focuses on learning to be independent. Their environment should support this natural drive, enabling the child to become competent and confident. The Montessori approach embraces the full development of the youngster, addressing all aspects (physical, social, emotional, and cognitive) of the child.
